UCLH FUSIC 3 day low cost longitudinal course
This three‑half‑day programme covers the standard UCLH FUSIC curriculum and builds in protected time for personal study and supervised scanning.
From: Tue 08 Sep 2026
To: Thu 24 Sep 2026
The UCLH FUSIC course has been running for seven years, and this year we are trialling an expanded three‑day programme in place of the previous single‑day model. The extended format is designed for candidates with a serious ambition to complete FUSIC within the UCLH critical care department. It remains open to external candidates, provided they have appropriate support within their own critical care teams for the second half of the programme.
The course combines expert scanning faculty, equipment familiar to those working in UCLH critical care, and protected time for private practice. The aim is to bridge the gap between didactic teaching and independent scanning, supporting trainees to progress confidently and safely.
Participants will need three days of study leave. Each morning consists of taught content alongside focused, small‑group scanning. Candidates will receive access to the UCLH FUSIC manual and webinars in advance, allowing the in‑person days to be as hands‑on as possible. Course dates will include an assessment of theoretical understanding before moving on to practical scanning.
Hands‑on scanning will take place using purpose‑built simulators, faculty models, and—where appropriate—peer modelling to provide real‑life scanning experience. This not only enhances technical skill but also helps candidates appreciate the patient perspective.
Afternoons are dedicated to self‑directed learning, with opportunities for further practice on simulation mannequins, colleagues, and—where appropriate—patients. Scanning patients is restricted to members of the UCLH critical care team. The programme is designed to improve independent acquisition of views and appropriate image storage in line with local governance, with close feedback provided during the following day’s session and at the end of the final day. Proposed timetable is attached.
