This comprehensive, CPD-accredited training course is tailored specifically for radiographers across London who require intravenous (IV) cannulation competency as part of their clinical practice. Whether you are new to cannulation or seeking to formalize and refresh your skills, this course provides both the theoretical foundation and the supervised practical experience required to safely and confidently perform IV cannulation in line with national and local governance policies.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Understand the anatomy and physiology relevant to peripheral venous access
Explain the indications, contraindications, and complications of IV cannulation
Demonstrate correct aseptic technique and safe cannulation practice
Accurately document and manage the IV access procedure
Recognize and appropriately respond to complications such as infiltration, extravasation, and phlebitis
Perform cannulation on simulation arms under the supervision of experienced educators
Course Content Includes:
Introduction to IV therapy and cannulation in radiographic practice
Legal and professional responsibilities (including consent and documentation)
Infection control and sharps safety
Vein selection, equipment handling, and troubleshooting techniques
Simulated practice sessions with feedback
Competency framework and next steps for clinical sign-off
Target Audience:
Radiographers working in diagnostic imaging, nuclear medicine, or interventional services across NHS and private settings who require IV access skills for contrast administration or therapeutic procedures.

Assessment & Certification:
Participants will be assessed during the practical component and provided with a certificate of attendance. A competency document will be issued for completion in the clinical setting under supervision. This will be shared by us to the College of Radiographers who will then go on to access this and subsequently share a formal certificate later.
