Reading Adult Videofluoroscopies, Module 9th September and Module II 14th November 2019

Day One: Introduction to Neurological Disorders
Monday 9th September 2019 9am - 4.0pm. Queen Square, London.
Aimed at delegates who:
• Routinely work with an adult neurology caseload
• Have a sound understanding of normal adult and elderly swallow physiology on radiological imaging (potentially including previous attendance at UCL basic VFS course)
• Are routinely participating in VFS clinics and/or referring into VFS clinics
Learning Outcomes:
1) To understand the impact of common neurological deficits on radiological presentation of swallow pathophysiology
2) To appreciate how VFS may be utilised with an adult neurological dysphagia pathway
3) To understand differences between radiological symptoms (aspiration, penetration, residues) versus changes in pathophysiology; and
4) To be familiar with scales to quantify changes in pathophysiology and radiological symptoms
This day will not directly cover:
• Normal and elderly swallow
• VFS clinic set-up
• Referrals into VFS clinic
• VFS protocols & reporting
• Dysphagia therapy
• Dysphagia management

Day Two: Intermediate Neurological Disorders
Thursday 14th of November 9am - 4.0pm. Queen Square, London.

Aimed at delegates who:
• Have a regular, working input into a VFS clinic in the neurological caseload
• Have an appreciation of radiological swallow presentation in common neurological disorders
• Have a working knowledge and practical application of the aspiration-penetration scale and awareness of clinically utilised residue scales.
Learning Outcomes:
1) To utilise more refined analysis in order to understand subtle changes in neuropathophysiology
2) To identify and assess the impact of dysphagia strategies and/or therapy radiologically
3) Understand use of VFS to support neurological differential diagnosis.

This day will not directly cover:
• Normal and elderly swallow
• Learning outcomes of day one
• VFS clinic set-up
• VFS protocols & reporting
• Referrals into VFS clinic

General content of both days:
• Direct teaching from experienced SLTs
• Opportunities to observe previously-recorded VFS images from common & rare neurological populations (acute and progressive)
• Opportunities to visualise and analyse VFS in small groups using pre-determined rating scales
• Large and small group discussions with supported analysis
• Question and answer sessions
